Ogre Bones WIP (Part 2)

In my last installment, I touched briefly on preparing my Reaper Bones ogre chieftain for paint, and  giving him a base coat of basic black to cover the plastic and start things off.

As you can see, I have finished most of the painting on his skin and eyes. I also gave his base a coating of primer and black paint to match the rest of the miniature. Read on for the detailed version of what I've done so far.

My first step in painting his skin was to apply a thin layer of Reaper Chestnut Brown to all of the exposed skin on the model, and there is a lot of it.

While the thin brown was still drying, I took a few moments to glue down some additional basing grit to better blend the base texture with the model's feet using some basic PVA glue. Later on, when the glue was dry, I also gave the grit a good coating of Woodland Scenics Scenic Cement to help make sure it doesn't go anywhere.

With the brown in place, I started to shade upwards into the Reaper Tanned Skin triad, starting with a one to one mix of Tanned Shadow and Chestnut Brown. Hopefully you can see the gradual transition to lighter and lighter colors in each successive photo. I swear it's not just a trick of the lights!

As you might expect, I made each successively lighter layer a little smaller, creating a transition from the dark brown in the very deepest shadows, all the way up to "Tanned Highlight" on the top highlights on his scalp and ears.

Now that I've seen him with his skin painted, I'm thinking that I might keep some or all of the straps on his equipment black. I like the look, and I would like to keep the over all tone of this miniature fairly dark.
